Brāhmī Script - causation formula in Pāli

ye dhammā hetuppabhāva
tesaṃ hetuṃ tathāgato āha
tesaṃ ca yo nirodho
evaṃ vādī mahāsamaṇo

Of those experiences that arise from a cause,
The Tathāgata has said, 'this is their cause',
And this is their cessation.
Thus the Great Striver teaches.

  1. Hi Jayarava,

There are some mistakes in the Brahmi version.

You have written ivam instead of evam. Also, /tu/ takes a horizontal line for the vowel sign.

Coincidentally, I just made a Brahmi Version of the forumula in my site.

You might wanna take a look at it.

Seems we had the same thought simultaneously :)

  2. Hey Vinod

Thanks for your comments - interesting synchronicity! I've corrected the image now. I haven't followed your font exactly, but I gather there is a huge amount of variation in Brāhmī so I can claim artistic licence.

  3. Hi Jayarava,

Yeah true. There are lots of variants in Brahmi . You can flip the characters, turn them upside down and do whatever u want, & still not claim artistic license at all !
